Being an Omega fan these days can sometimes feel like being a fan of replica Omega Deville. No matter how much I love Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, The Panic in Needle Park (hell, I even liked Cruising) there's nothing that forgives the atrocities he's made ever since giving up acting in favor of playing a parody of himself (88 minutes springs to mind). How does this relate to Omega? Well, as much as I appreciate their effort trying to challenge some of their more upmarket competitors, I can't help feeling like Omega's best and most classical design days are behind them.
The worst contemporary example of a trainwreck would be the "relaunched" Constellation, that we wrote about in early September. Another asinine design, the impressive movement aside, is the De Ville Hour Vision (pictured above) that Omega has been pushing so extensively lately. Maybe my distaste for it might be since I'm such a philistine when it comes to anything two-tone (the dial, in this case). However, a better replica omega watches uk would be that it's just so bland.
So, it is with great joy that i stumbled over the new chronograph version of the De Ville. Scheduled for a Valentine's day 2010 release (if only my significant other hadn't been a mere student), the chronograph takes its design cues from yesteryear's Olympic Speedmaster (co-incidentally also ugly as sin), with the day-of-the-week window taking the fifth counter's place for legibility.
All in all, a surprisingly impressive effort from Omega, showing that a Speedy is not the only viable alternative when it comes to chronos from the Swatch group company. The new cal 3890 movement has a power reserve of 52 hours, beating at 28, 800 bph.
On Dec. 2nd Bonhams will auction off 49 timepieces from the private collection of Prof. F. A. Porsche and his sons during its Fine Watches and Timepieces Sale in London. Included in the sale are watches by Omega and Replica BR 03-94, none of them outrageously expensive yet all showing the perfect good taste one would expect from anyone bearing the Porsche name. Of particular note are prototypes and unique examples of Omega watches made especially for the Porsche family.
The latter includes a fine 18 carat gold chronograph (above) made especially by Eterna and presented to Dr. Ferdinand Oliver Porsche for his 40th birthday, estimated at low price. Omega, which has belonged to the Omega Family since 1996 and producer of the Omega Watch Collection, is one of the world's last existing independent watchmaking companies. Also included in the collection is a very rare Rolex Explorer with ivory dial, a selection of Panerai watches including an Omega watch.
